NEW THINGS UNDER THE SUN
Karolina Hedstrom, Nicolas Pankhurst, Gabrielle Iwelumo, Gemma Lovett, May 20-23, 2011
These four London-based artists showcase through their work a selected, shared archive of history. The work portrays monuments, stories, people, ideas and objects that pose questions about the truth of known history, the selection process and the fluidity of history. Whose history is it and how can it help us live our lives? History is personal, intimate and relative as well as universal, communal and factual. Working together on the concept, the varied work by the artists displays thoughts on this complex and important subject matter.
The fascination of the archive and its nature lends itself well to the filing, storing and displaying of history and ideas. The labelling and categorizing of items is an important part of our brains and for our understanding of the world.
